Commentators explain that Christ “came and preached” not just during His earthly ministry, but primarily after His resurrection through the Holy Spirit and the apostles. This is how the gospel message reached the Gentiles (“far off”) as well as the Jews (“nigh”). As John Calvin notes, the preaching of the apostles in Christ's name is rightly considered Christ's own preaching. This means Christ continues to speak peace through His church today.
