All commentators agree that God intentionally led Israel on a longer, more difficult route. He did this out of protective care, knowing the newly freed people were not yet ready for war with the powerful Philistines. As Matthew Henry notes, God mercifully proportions His people's trials to their strength, shielding them from challenges they cannot yet handle.
