A Symbol of Separation

Commentators unanimously agree that moving the tent 'afar off from the camp' was a powerful, physical symbol of the spiritual separation caused by Israel's idolatry. John Calvin calls it a 'sign of the divorce between God and the Israelites.' God's holy presence was removed from their midst to show them the severe consequence of their sin and the pollution it created.
