A Pattern of Divine Judgment

Commentators unanimously explain that God is drawing a direct parallel to His judgment on the generation that came out of Egypt. Just as the unfaithful Israelites were condemned to wander and die in the wilderness for their rebellion (Numbers 14), God promises to enact a similar judgment upon the current generation for their own unfaithfulness.
