This verse lists priests who could not prove their lineage. One priest married into the famous family of Barzillai the Gileadite and took their name. Commentators suggest he may have done this for social status, as the priesthood was held in low esteem during the Babylonian exile. He chose a more honored family name over his own priestly one, a decision that had consequences for his descendants.
