Promise Predates the Law
Paul makes a powerful legal argument. Commentators explain that since God's covenant of promise with Abraham was established 430 years before the Law was given to Moses, the Law cannot retroactively cancel the original agreement. Just as a modern contract or treaty cannot be voided by a law passed by one party centuries later, the Law cannot nullify God's prior, unconditional promise.
