A Picture of Atonement
Commentators explain that Jacob's phrase "I will appease him" literally means "I will cover his face" in Hebrew. This powerful imagery, of covering an offense so it can no longer be seen by the offended party, is the same root concept used for the biblical idea of atonement. Jacob's gift was an attempt to cover his past sin so that Esau might "lift up his face" in acceptance.
