The Wisdom of Separation

Commentators explain that Joseph's plan to tell Pharaoh his family were shepherds was strategically wise. Since shepherds were an 'abomination' to Egyptians, this ensured the family would be settled separately in Goshen. This isolation was providentially used by God to protect them from assimilating into Egyptian idolatry and to preserve them as a distinct people, the 'body of the Church' as Calvin puts it.
