Scholars clarify that this verse describes two distinct groups. The "Nephilim" were violent tyrants already on the earth. Then, when the godly line of Seth ("sons of God") intermarried with ungodly women, their children became the "mighty men... of renown." This second group, born from compromised faith, were famous warriors who imitated the Nephilim's wickedness.
