Commentators unanimously explain that 'the promise' these Old Testament heroes did not receive was the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. While they were commended for their great faith and saw many specific promises fulfilled, they lived and died looking forward to the ultimate promise of the Savior. As multiple scholars note, they simply did not live to see Christ come in the flesh.
