God's Purpose in Pain

All commentators agree that God uses affliction for a redemptive purpose. The painful experience with the Assyrians was designed to be a divine lesson, or as John Calvin calls it, a necessary "medicine." It was meant to cure Israel of its destructive habit of relying on fickle human alliances and to teach the remnant to place their trust exclusively in God, their only true protector.
