A Tale of Two Deliverers
Commentators are divided on the identity of the "righteous man from the east." Many, like Calvin and historic Jewish interpreters, see him as Abraham, called from the east to be a model of God's faithfulness. However, most modern commentators, including Barnes and Ellicott, argue compellingly that the figure is Cyrus the Great, the Persian king prophesied to conquer Babylon and free the Israelites. In either case, the point is God's power to raise up a specific person for His redemptive purpose.
