It shall happen, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, says Yahweh, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it desolate forever.

The Rod in the Fire

Commentators explain that God used Babylon as an instrument, or a 'rod,' to discipline His people. However, this did not excuse Babylon's own sin and cruelty. Once God's purpose for the exile was complete, He held Babylon accountable for its 'iniquity,' just as a rod used for correction is eventually cast into the fire. This shows that God can use nations for His sovereign purposes while still holding them responsible for their actions.
