The Folly of False Wisdom
Commentators unanimously identify the "boasters" (or "liars") as Babylon's soothsayers, diviners, and astrologers. These individuals prided themselves on their special knowledge, but God's judgment would expose their wisdom as utter foolishness. Their supposed spiritual insight offered no protection and, as John Gill notes, was actually a cause of their ruin.
