God's Unceasing Work

Commentators explain that when Jesus says, "My Father is always at his work," he's clarifying the nature of God's Sabbath. God's "rest" after creation wasn't a complete stop. He continuously works to sustain the universe—making the sun rise, giving rain, and upholding all of creation. The Sabbath command for humanity to rest from their own labor was never meant to imply that God himself becomes inactive.
