The king of the children of Ammon answered to the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan: now therefore restore those [lands] again peaceably.

A Half-Truth for War
Commentators explain that the Ammonite king's claim was a distortion of history. Israel had been forbidden to attack Ammon and had taken the land from the Amorite king, Sihon, who had attacked them first. While the Amorites may have previously taken the land from Ammon, this was not Israel's concern. The king's plea was a plausible-sounding but factually incorrect pretext for war.
