Commentators agree that the "sign of Jonah" is a direct reference to the death and resurrection of Jesus. Just as Jonah was metaphorically dead in the belly of the great fish for three days and then returned, Jesus would be buried in the tomb and rise again. This resurrection would serve as the ultimate and final sign offered to that generation.
