Commentators explain that salt which has lost its saltiness is completely useless—it's not even fit for soil or manure. Jesus uses this stark image to describe a person whose profession of faith is not backed by genuine, inner transformation. Such a 'disciple' is of no use to God's kingdom and, like the worthless salt, is fit only to be 'cast out.'
