Faith That Breaks Barriers
Commentators emphasize the extreme effort involved in getting the man to Jesus. Scholars describe Palestinian roofs as made of tile, thatch, and compacted earth, or having a 'roof door' in an upper room. In either case, the men's act of 'breaking it up' was a destructive, laborious, and unconventional demonstration of their desperate faith. It shows that true faith is not passive but will find a way to Jesus, no matter the obstacle.
