Commentators explain that the disciples' question stemmed from a logical puzzle. They knew the prophecy that Elijah would come first to 'restore all things' (Malachi 4:5–6). So, if Elijah was supposed to prepare everyone successfully, they couldn't understand why Jesus, the Messiah, was predicting his own rejection and death. They were perplexed by the idea of a suffering Messiah.
