A Prophecy Fulfilled in Pattern
Commentators explain that this is a “typological” fulfillment. The original prophecy in Hosea 11:1 referred to God calling the nation of Israel (His “son”) out of Egypt. Matthew sees Jesus as the true and ultimate Son of God, whose life recapitulates and perfects Israel's story. Therefore, Jesus’s return from Egypt fulfills the divine pattern God established with His people.
