Jesus dismantles the Pharisees' attempts to create 'lesser' oaths. Commentators explain that swearing by the altar inherently includes the sacred gifts upon it. Similarly, swearing by the temple invokes God who dwells there. You cannot separate a holy object from the source of its holiness. This logic exposes the futility of trying to make promises that don't ultimately answer to God.
