Falsehood as Twisted Truth

Commentators like Calvin and Aquinas explain that the "false witnesses" didn't invent a story from nothing. Instead, they maliciously twisted Jesus's actual words. Jesus spoke of the temple of His body (John 2:19), but they perverted His statement into a literal threat against the physical temple in Jerusalem. This shows how a slight distortion of the truth can become a damnable lie.
