Character Determines Conduct
Commentators explain that this verse teaches a fundamental spiritual law: our actions ("fruit") are a direct result of our inner character ("tree"). A person whose heart is genuinely good, transformed by God's grace, will naturally produce good works. Conversely, a corrupt heart cannot consistently produce genuinely good fruit. As Charles Spurgeon notes, "Every man produces according to his nature; he cannot do otherwise."
