The Gospel Isn't a Patch
Most commentators explain that Jesus is teaching that His new covenant cannot simply be patched onto the old system of Jewish legalism. The Gospel is not a mere repair job for an old religion; it is something entirely new and transformative. Trying to force the new (the Gospel) into the old framework (legalistic traditions) will only make things worse, creating a bigger spiritual tear or 'schism'.
