Regret vs. True Repentance
Commentators like John Calvin note that the Israelites' sudden desire to enter Canaan was not true repentance, but a 'feigned penitence.' They were not humbly submitting to God's new command to turn back; instead, they were trying to evade the consequences of their earlier sin. True repentance involves accepting God's will, even when it includes difficult judgments, rather than trying to fix things on our own terms.
