Charles Ellicott Commentary

Charles Ellicott Commentary
"It is a snare to a man rashly to say, [It is] holy, And after vows to make inquiry." — Proverbs 20:25 (ASV)
It is a snare to a man who devours that which is holy.— Rather, It is a snare for a man (that is, gets him into trouble) to say rashly, “It is dedicated” (that is, when he thoughtlessly dedicates anything to God), and after he has vowed to inquire (whether he can keep his word). (Sirach 5:4-6.)
