John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"for ye were bought with a price: glorify God therefore in your body." — 1 Corinthians 6:20 (ASV)
Glorify God. From this conclusion, it appears that the Corinthians took liberties for themselves in outward matters, which it was necessary to restrain and control.
The reproof, therefore, is this: he affirms that the body is subject to God no less than the soul. Accordingly, it is reasonable that both should be devoted to His glory.
“As it is fitting that the mind of a believer should be pure, so there must also be a corresponding outward profession before men, since the power of both is in the hands of God, who has redeemed both.”
With the same purpose, he declared a short time ago that not only our souls but our bodies also are temples of the Holy Spirit. This was to prevent us from thinking we discharge our duty to Him correctly if we do not devote ourselves wholly and entirely to His service, so that He may by His word regulate even the outward actions of our life.
