The Guards' Grim Fate

Commentators explain that Herod's execution of the guards, while brutal, was standard Roman law. A guard who allowed a prisoner to escape was subject to the same penalty the prisoner would have faced. This wasn't necessarily an act of special cruelty but the expected, harsh reality of their duty.
