For every matter of trespass, whether it be for ox, for donkey, for sheep, for clothing, or for any kind of lost thing, whereof one says, `This is mine,` the cause of both parties shall come before God. He whom God condemns shall pay double to his neighbor.

Justice for Accuser & Accused

Commentators explain this law was designed to be fair to both parties in a dispute over property. If a person entrusted with an item was found to have stolen it, they paid double. However, if the accuser was found to have made a false claim, they also faced a penalty. This system protected both personal property and personal reputation from fraud and false accusations.
